For this project, I wanted to explore the themes surrounding sex workers and how they get treated within the sex industry. As we know, the sex and porn industry is heavily male dominated, and as someone who has friends that were in and had left the sex industry, I wanted to know their story and how they were treated within their line work. Then I had asked some of my friends what their experiences were like whilst they were working as sex workers. They had told me that there wasn’t that much legalities when it came to the protection of sex workers, and that there are people that glamourise the industry when they have no idea of the realities and struggles that actual sex workers go through on a daily basis. Taking their expereinces into account, me and my brother had collaborated through illustration and graphic design (I would work on the illustrations, he would work on the graphic design), and we translated their expereinces through words and phrases that would stand out and express the stories that were told to me more effectively. Making this project was very important to me, as it’s a topic that leaves a lasting impression on me, and so the opportunity to tell their experiences through illustration helped me a lot in terms of authorial illustration.
